Episode 19: Pod By Night - Rush (The Band) with special guest Mike
Friday Mar 20, 2020
Friday Mar 20, 2020
What happens when 2 dedicated Rush fans try to convert someone into the fold? Let's find out! During this wide ranging discussion, Tim and our guest Mike talk about their love for some of Canada's favorite musical sons and provide some entry points for Todd.
This is actually a really cool episode where we of course focus on Rush, but also get into a fairly fun tangent on jazz trumpet player Clark Terry, whom it turns out we all some connection to as well. Enjoy!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's the trailer for the Rush documentary Beyond The Lighted Stage.
- Todd was being foolish when talking about U2 briefly during this episode... Of course Bono is the lead vocalist for the band, not Edge.
- Pretty sure this is the live version of "Working Man" from Cleveland that Tim was talking about.
- "The Weapon" live with the intro by Count Floyd.
- Here's a little bonus for ya... Neil Peart during Drum Solo Week on Letterman back in 2011.
- Clark Terry was THE MAN. Check out his bio on Wikipedia, his book, his movie, and the documentary Keep On Keeping On.
- Oh, and there's a couple version of his signature song "Mumbles"... How about a wicked old version from 1965 with the Oscar Peterson Trio? Here's one from 1985 with Woody Herman and the Young Thundering Herd. And here's one featuring Clark alongside the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin from 2001.
...AND ANOTHER THING:
Mike recommends checking out YYNot Band and Sea Shepherd
Todd advises you to get listening to the new album Apollo by Electro Deluxe
And Tim wants y'all to know that Westworld is back baby!

Episode 18: WTF BSG?!
Tuesday Mar 17, 2020
Tuesday Mar 17, 2020
In this episode, we talk about the Battlestar Galactica ... thing ... that's happening on NBC's new streaming service. Though it's not a reboot, it supposedly won't share any cast, but takes place in the same universe as Ron Moore's BSG, and we have no idea when it'll actually be available to watch. So yeah... this one seems like it's humming along like a finely tuned machine. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean we can't spend some time wildly speculating about what it could be!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's the original Hollywood Reporter post about the new show from September 2019, then the latest article we found on Cineblend from February 2020, and then another one from Slashfilm in February 2020 for the sake of completeness.
- Welcome to another edition of "Tim Was Right, Todd Was Wrong"... Tim was closer to the truth about the time jump at the end of "Daybreak Part 3" (the final episode of Ron Moore's BSG) because it's a 150,000 year difference between the crew landing on Earth and present day, not millions of years as Todd claimed.
- Well, well, well... looks like SNL posted the old Eddie Murphy "James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub Party" in a decent resolution after all!
- And the most recent actor we thought who was no longer with us but turns out to be very alive was Dennis "I've Got 98 Acting Credits To My Name So Stop Calling Me Mister Belding" Haskins!
...AND ANOTHER THING:
Tim was very excited about Mile Davis' 1981 album The Man With The Horn, which features drummer Al Foster, saxophonist Bill Evans, guitarists Mike Stern and Barry Finnerty, Marcus Miller on bass, and others. Specifically, you ought to check out the track "Fat Time".
Todd thinks a deep dive into Keith Jarrett's The Koln Concert is well worth your time as well as reading some of the history behind the event and why it's considered a bit of a masterpiece.

Episode 17: Free Range Idiocy Trailer Park - 2020 Movie Previews
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Monday Feb 24, 2020
We're rollin' up into the Free Range Idiocy Trailer Park to preview all the movies we want to see that are coming out in 2020 (and the ones we don't want to see) based solely on the online trailers. Join us as we discuss CGI dogs, the wonders of youth, how DC can mangle another property, and whether the world really needed another movie about cars!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's the list of 2020 movies and trailers that we used for research.
- Tim was correct, it does appear that Morbius will be associated with the MCU in some way.
- For those of you who aren't familiar with Stranger Things (like Todd), here's a link to the awesomely named Finn Wolfhard's IMDB page.
- Here's that article Todd was reading about the term "uncanny valley".
- Here's a link to Keanu Reeves on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
- Here's an article talking about Alex Winter's work as a producer, the internet, and Bitcoin.
- For those of you that didn't experience the about mindjob that was MTV's Liquid Television in real time, here's the first clip of "The Head".
- Yeah, Wonder Woman is a badass (aka the No Mans Land scene).
- Chuck Yeager's Wikipedia page is pretty interesting reading, but the book is better.
...AND ANOTHER THING:
Tim was in a literary mood for this episode and recommends you check out the Mobituaries podcast and book by Mo Rocca wherein he gives remarkable people the send-offs they really deserve. Also, check out the wiki page for John Quincy Adams since we got on that tangent as well.
Todd had a chance to catch the gypsy flamenco swing trio Ameranouche awhile back and would recommend downloading everything possible by them and also finding them out live.

Episode 16: Rando With Mando - The Mandalorian Recap
Friday Feb 14, 2020
Friday Feb 14, 2020
In the immortal words of Carl Weathers, MANDO!!!!
Yup, it's time for us to recap one of our favorite creative endeavors of 2019, The Mandalorian. Join us as we run down our favorite moments, characters, and episodes from the first season. And yes, we manage to squeeze in some wrasslin' and Battlestar Galactica references as well.
LINKS OF INTEREST:

- Everything you need to know about The Mandalorian from Wikipedia.
- Go back and check out our MCU Grab Bag in Episode 8 for all the stuff Tim was referencing.
- The animated Thanksgiving-themed talking turkey movie that featured George Takei as the voice of a time machine (it really does make sense in the context of the movie) was called Free Birds and features not only Woody Harrelson, but Owen Wilson, Amy Poehler, Keith David, and Star Trek TNG and Deep Space Nine alumni Colm Meaney.
- Yeah, Kurt Vonnegut didn't like semicolons that much, saying: “Here is a lesson in creative writing. The first rule: do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college.” Source.
- Here's a quick reference about military ranks in the Star Wars universe. And for those wondering, Moff was the rank held by the Sector Governors of the First Galactic Empire (via Wookiepedia).
- Will Katee Sackhoff be appearing in the next season of The Mandalorian? The answer is... she can't say.
...AND ANOTHER THING:
Tim recommends checking out the South Korean movie Parasite, which did end up winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
Todd would recommend stepping away from Facebook for awhile if it's causing you more grief than it's worth. Here's an article about someone's experience.

Wednesday Jan 29, 2020
WE'RE BACK BABY!!! Okay, that felt good... In this episode, we run down all the happenings at the 2020 WWE Royal Rumble - the good, the bad, and the ugly.
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's a list of all the winners of the Royal Rumble from 1988 until this year.
- Initially, Vince McMahon wasn't a fan of the Rumble, but changed his mind when the TV folks liked it.
- We've probably linked this before, but it's always a fun watch - here's Ax and Smash of Demolition as the first two entires in the 1989 Royal Rumble.
- Yeah, Tim was right about that giant pop when AJ Styles debuted at the Royal Rumble a couple years back.
- Here's Jake "The Snake" Roberts telling the behind the scenes story about his infamous cobra incident with Randy "Macho Man" Savage on Joe Roagn. NSFW because Jake loves him some four-letter words.
- Here's some great Kofi Kingston Royal Rumble saves.
...AND ANOTHER THING:
Tim recommends checking out Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road by RUSH drummer Neil Peart.
Todd thinks you should listen to episode #405 of The Tim Ferriss show featuring Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller.

Thursday Jan 09, 2020
The dynamic duo of idiocy is joined by special guest Jimmy Dice of Scruffy Looking Podcasters (a weekly Star Wars podcast right here on Podbean) to dissect, digest, and digress on the topic of the end of the Skywalker Saga. Episode 13: Bradygeddon!!!
Tuesday Dec 17, 2019
Tuesday Dec 17, 2019
Going from sports entertainment to plain ol' sports, we explore the mental meltdown taking place in New England around the potential departure of Patriots franchise quarterback and New England folk legend, Tom Brady. We'll go over how we got here, what's happening, and the best/worst case scenarios for the Pats and Brady. Dig in!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's the Tom E. Curran article that started this whole mess.
- Correction: the Patriots have missed the playoffs TWICE during Brady's time as a starter. First time was after the 2002 season when they were 9-7. The second time was after the 2008 season when they were 11-5 with Matt Cassel at the helm when Brady was injured in the first quarter of the first regular season game.
- Here's the franchise stats for the Boston/New England Patriots and the career stats for Tom Brady.
- At the moment, the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are tied for most Super Bowl wins at 6 each, with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49er's in the second with 5 each. The Patriots do hold the record for most Super Bowl appearances as a franchise with 11, with Pittsburgh, Dallas, and Denver in second with 8 each.
- The Patriots hold the record for consecutive games won (regular season and playoffs combined) at 21 (2003-2004). They also had an 18-game win streak (2007-2008) and have a 16-game regular season win streak (2007).
- Joe Montana wound up in Kansas City by trade. The 49er's traded Montana, safety David Whitmore, and a 1994 third round pick to the Chiefs for their 1993 first round pick (18th overall).
- Some information on the net worths of Gisele and Tom Brady.
- No, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy never played in the NFL, although he did spend six seasons in the Arena Football League. The Brett Favre back-up Todd was thinking of was Craig Nall. Incidentally, Nall's five career touchdown passes are approximately four more than we thought he'd have.
- Here's a link to The Big Lead post about potential Tom Brady replacements in New England.
...AND ANOTHER THING:
- Tim highly recommends both the book version of Moneyball by Michael Lewis and the movie Moneyball starring Brad Pitt.
- Todd advises everyone to download and buy the physical CD of the new album Self-Titled by Rustic Overtones immediately.

Episode 012: What The Hell Just Happened?! - 2019 WWE Survivor Series
Friday Dec 06, 2019
Friday Dec 06, 2019
As a couple of wrestling geeks from way back, we figured it was about time we got down to the nitty gritty and talked about what's happening in Vince's playground. After watching this year's Survivor Series, we got together and went through the card discussing what the hell just happened. Pull on your elbow pads and luchador mask - it's time to get to the ring!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Turns out the Busta Rhymes video Todd was thinking about isn't exactly what he thought, but here it is anyways - "Gimme Some More" (NSFW for language). And while we're here, how about a bit of Busta rapping live on the radio? (NSFW again for language)
- How over was Steve Blackman back in the day? Not so much. Not only was that nowhere close to a Road Warriors pop, he didn't get a Crash Holly pop.
- Neither one of us could explain how taping injured ribs would help, so after some quick Google Fu, the answer is... Not much. In fact, doctors now recommend not taping ribs because it restricts the ability to take deep breaths which can help avoid getting pneumonia.
- Yeah, Ricochet is pretty good. Here's that clip of him jumping out of the ring to meet up with Velveteen Dream.
- Here's the Triple-H versus Taka Michinoku match was from RAW back in the day.
- That time Tommaso Ciampa came to the ring with no music and got roundly booed? Yeah, we've got that.
AND ANOTHER THING...
- TIM: A big ol' shout out to the soundtrack for Hamilton, the current touring show, and Paris Nix in particular.
- TODD: Dig in to TBNH by The Brand New Heavies for a funky good time.

Friday Nov 22, 2019
Tim and Todd are back with another deep dive into one of their favorite geek topics, Battlestar Galactica! In this episode, we'll be talking about our favorite episodes from the second half of season 3 with some slight detours into Westworld, professional wrestling, and the films of Spike Lee. Strap yourself into your Viper, grab your headphones, and get ready for launch!
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Our apologies once again to Tahmoh Pennikett for one of us spacing on his name... again.
- The actor who played Da Mayor in Do The Right Thing was the wonderful Ossie Davis. Interesting bit of trivia, Ossie was co-starred in one of the most oddly heartwarming movies Todd has watched, Bubba Ho-Tep, where he joins forces with Bruce Campbell (playing a geriatric Elvis Presley) as they fight back against an Egyptian mummy come back from the dead. And yes, it's just as delightfully weird as it sounds.
- The actor who played the doctor in "The Woman King" and Senator Kelly in X-Men and X2: X-Men United? That'd be the prolific Bruce Davison, who's acted in 268 films to date, including James Maine in Titanic 2. For those of you who didn't know they made a sequel to Titanic... they didn't, it's just as bad as you'd think it'd be, and you're welcome.
AND ANOTHER THING:
- TIM: The sixth season of Silicon Valley which is currently streaming on HBO GO.
- TODD: The Reboot Roadshow with Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes or just check out Jay & Silent Bob Reboot at your local theater. Here's the red band trailer, so be forewarned that there's a dump truck full of bad language and objectionable material to follow. Enjoy!

Episode 010: The NFL - The Worst & The Best
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
It's time to dissect one of America's favorite institutions and talk about the best and the worst of the National Football League. In this episode, we discuss all the things that make the league a fun and entertaining watch as well as all the things that bug us to no end.
LINKS OF INTEREST:
- Here's the return of the Dudley Boyz on WWE RAW in August of 2015.
- In case you're wondering who Iron Mike Sharpe is, here he is up against The British Bulldog back in 1992.
- Some documentation on the Oakland A's winning 20 games in a row during the 2002 MLB season.
- Here's George Carlin talking about the differences between baseball and football.
- For the record, Anthony Munoz retired with 4 career touchdown receptions.
- Actually, four teams have never played in a Super Bowl - the Browns, Lions, Texans, and ... the Jaguars.
AND ANOTHER THING:
- TIM: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown ... which we highly recommend buying on BluRay, DVD, VHS, and Beta.
- TODD: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
